What metabolism means
Metabolism is the sum of chemical processes that keep the body functioning and convert food into usable energy. Resting energy expenditure varies with body size, lean mass, age, genetics, hormones, health status and other factors.
Thermogenesis is not a synonym for fat loss
Some ingredients can modestly increase energy expenditure or heat production under study conditions. A small change in thermogenesis does not automatically translate into meaningful long-term fat loss, especially when appetite, intake and adaptation are not controlled.
Caffeine: measurable, but not magic
Caffeine can increase alertness and may transiently affect energy expenditure and exercise performance. Tolerance, dose, sleep disruption and total daily intake matter. More stimulant is not automatically better.
Why ingredient lists can look impressive
Green tea extracts, capsicum, carnitine, chromium, plant extracts and amino acids appear frequently in weight-management formulas. The evidence varies by ingredient and dose, and some products combine many ingredients at amounts too low or too opaque to compare directly with research.
Finished-product evidence is the missing step
When a brand cites studies on ingredients but has no trial on the finished formula, the strongest defensible conclusion is that the ingredients have been studied—not that the retail product will reproduce those results.
Set realistic expectations
A supplement should not replace balanced nutrition, physical activity, sleep or medical care. If weight is affecting your health, evidence-based clinical options may be more appropriate than repeatedly cycling through retail supplements.
